Our Primary Funder – Mariwala Health Initiative (MHI)
Since April 2015, iCALL has been primarily supported by the Mariwala Health Initiative (MHI), a leading mental health funding organisation in India. This longstanding partnership has played a vital role in enabling iCALL to provide accessible, affordable, inclusive, and quality mental health support to individuals and communities across the country.
MHI works towards building a more accessible mental health ecosystem through a rights-based approach. MHI supports innovative, community-driven initiatives that seek to make mental health care more inclusive, responsive, and grounded in the lived experiences of diverse communities, particularly those that have been marginalized. By adopting a systemic perspective, MHI believes that mental health is shaped not only by individual experiences but also by the broader social realities and systems such as caste, gender, religion, region, disability, sexuality, and other forms of social inequality and exclusion that impact people’s lives. This approach further moves beyond a purely medical model of mental illness and encourages conversations that centre dignity, equity, and social justice.
In addition to being a leading innovator in the field of community mental health and supporting multiple organizations working in community mental health, MHI also invests in knowledge and capacity building, and resources aimed at building anti-oppressive therapeutic practice. This includes Queer Affirmative Counseling Practice (QACP), ReFrame (the annual MHI journal), Counter Narratives Conference (MHI’s first national-level academic conference), resources on suicide prevention, and several other learning opportunities for mental health professionals and organizations.
